In stress and weight issues, being overweight poses many health risks. Obesity has been associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. The incidence of obesity (defined as greater than 20% above the ideal weight for height) in adults is now greater than one in three.

Stress, obesity, and excessive weight gain have various causes. People often think that the cause is due to overeating. However, the causes are often deeper than that. They may relate to culture, toxic environment, exercise habits, sleep, stress and diet & nutrition. Other stress and weight gain considerations include genetic makeup, biochemical individuality, and psychological and physiological factors.

In weight gain due to stress, environment has an influence upon our eating habits. Our society is fast-paced, stressful, and market-driven. The onset of obesity has been associated with watching television. There is a “consumer culture” that conditions people to eat more and more “convenient” “foods” such as fast foods that are processed and high in hydrogenated fat, filled with chemicals, preservatives, artificial colorings, pesticides, and sugar. In the prevention of stress and weight gain, it is good to understand that these foods offer the least nutrition and most potential for adding fat to our hips and thighs. The food industry spends $36 billion every year on advertising. An average child sees up to 10,000 food commercials every year.

For stress and weight gain concerns, other causes of excessive weight gain include food allergies and nutritional deficiencies. Food allergies cause water retention and weight gain. They are also responsible for food cravings and many physical and emotional problems. Furthermore, nutritional deficiencies can cause neurotransmitter metabolic dysregulation.
