Adequate protein intake is important to proper immune function. Obesity is associated with decreased immune functioning thereby making a person more vulnerable to infections. Many over-weight and obese people simply are not digesting enough protein. Proteins are made up of amino acids. In order to break proteins down to amino acids that can cross the blood brain barrier, protein digestion must occur. Gastric acid and pepsin initiate the digestion of dietary protein. The next step happens in the duodenum where proteins are broken down into oligopeptides and amino acids by pancreatic enzymes in a process called hydrolysis. Final protein digestion occurs in the intestine where amino acids can be absorbed. Amino acids are utilized by the brain to produce neurotransmitters. Most important in appetite control are dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). Balance in these neurotransmitter levels can reduce cravings.
