Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a natural way to train your body and mind to reduce stress and anxiety. PMR involves a series of exercises where different muscle groups are first made tense, then the tension is released in concert with deep, diaphragmatic breathing. Muscles in the head, face, neck, shoulders, arms, abdomen, thighs, calves, back, and feet are given individual attention. Each muscle is first made tense by the exercise. Then, the tension is released with the diaphragmatic breath. PMR exercises have been shown to relax blood flow, decrease muscle discomfort and tension, ease emotional stress, improve sleep, and decrease blood pressure. Most people are not aware of what it feels like to be relaxed. A series of training exercise sessions teach this method of reducing stress. A CD reinforces what is learned and further facilitates training. The result is that the person’s ability to relax and let go of inner tension, anxiety and stress is enhanced. When PMR is combined with visualization techniques and light meditation, it becomes an even more powerful method to reduce anxiety, stress, and inner tension. All that is required is a willingness to learn the method, the discipline to practice daily, a quiet place, and, if desired, a CD player to facilitate the process. Children as well as adults can benefit.
