Essential Nutrients are derived from food. The body is unable to manufacture them on its own. These are necessary for human life and include eight amino acids, at least 13 vitamins, at least 15 minerals, plus specific fatty acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Essential amino acids include isoleucine, leucine, valine, methionine, threonine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan. These amino acids are involved in many metabolic activities including energy production, healing, and neurotransmitter synthesis. Essential vitamins are either fat- soluble or water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins include A, D, E and K. The water-soluble vitamins are C (ascorbic acid), B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (methylcobalamin), folic acid, and biotin. Essential minerals include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, iodine, chromium, potassium, sodium, and some trace elements. Low levels of these nutrients have been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, schizophrenia, and menopausal symptoms. Vitamins & minerals help regulate the conversion of food into energy and provide protection against damaging toxins from drugs, alcohol, radiation and environmental pollution. All are essential in obtaining adequate appetite control.
