Certain foods, caffeine, sugar, drugs, nicotine, alcohol and over-eating can all interfere with deep, restful sleep and are best avoided. Food allergies/sensitivities could also disturb sleep. Testing for food allergies can be performed by blood tests and/or a skilled applied kinesiologist (muscle testing). Once foods that one is allergic and/or sensitive to are identified, they are best avoided especially before bedtime. Although each individual is unique, the following modifications may prove useful in improving sleep. First, avoid caffeine in all forms (e.g., coffee, cola, tea, chocolate). Second, eat a protein-rich meal for dinner. Although it is best to avoid eating before bedtime, some people benefit from a light protein snack (e.g., protein shake; nuts) before sleep. Third, include plenty of raw vegetables and salad greens in the diet. Fourth, eat whole grains and avoid processed foods. Fifth, begin a rotation diet where each food is rotated every 4 or 5 days. The variety improves nutrition and reduces the effect of food allergies/sensitivities. Sixth, avoid processed fats (e.g., hydrogenated oils) and include healthy fats such as fish, olive, flaxseed, coconut and walnut oils.
