Sleep has a restorative capacity and function. It is a time to reduce the body’s toxic load. Helping the body’s organs to detoxify through diet, nutrition and drainage remedies can be helpful in restoring homeostasis (balance) and as a result improve sleep. In a healthy person, the body’s detoxification system is able to neutralize and eliminate toxins. As a result, tissue damage and illness are prevented (or at least minimized). Organs involved in detoxification include the liver, kidneys, lungs, intestines, skin and lymphatic system. Toxic overload can stress and sometimes overwhelm these organ systems. The result can include accelerated aging, chronic degenerative diseases, and disturbances in sleep. Detoxification therapy can take many forms. The first factor to consider when thinking about detoxification is exposure. Where are the contaminants coming from? Contaminated food, water, and air are three sources. Therefore, consuming only organically farmed and raised foods is step one. Step 2 is to consume pure water. Purchase a reverse-osmosis water filtration system which can eliminate most toxins. Also, a shower filter is recommended since the skin absorbs water during showers. The third step is to get a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) rated air filter for the home and automobile. Step 4 is to maintain a household free of toxic chemicals. Use only natural, organic cleaning products and detergents. Juicing, fasting and exercise are the next steps to be taken with professional guidance.
