Stress management, or reducing anxiety, begins with knowing that stress is a response to a situation. Stress involves a physical, emotional and/or spiritual reaction to external or internal demands. Often, stress-situations are experienced as anxiety. Anxiousness and stressfulness may also be expressed as muscle tension, headaches and upset stomach. Stress management for families, teens or children can include treating the sense of hopelessness coupled with feelings of isolation and loneliness. At the Family Stress Reduction Institute, Valley Cottage and Tarrytown, NY, we specialize in natural, holistic, psychological treatments of these conditions. Our stress management facility focuses holistic care and drug-free therapy in the healing process. In a holistic understanding of our needs, we can see how so many of us lose touch with our own self, as we struggle to manage the various demands for our attention. Whenever we experience time pressure, we are likely to feel stress and anxiety in our body, mind and Spirit.
Stress Management Treatment
Stress management begins with understanding stress’s undesirable consequences. We are exuding extra energy required to adapt to worrisome situations. Some of these effects are conscious. For example, symptoms such as gastro-intestinal discomfort, increased heart rate, perspiration, and headache and fear are experienced consciously. However, many of the consequences of prolonged stress are hidden or unconscious. Examples include increase in hormones, such as cortisol and endorphins that are secreted in order to respond to the stress-charged situation.
Certainly having a disease or illness is stressful. However, it is important to consider the reverse: the impact that prolonged stress-reaction has in creating the conditions that increase disease. In stress reduction psychology (for the family, couples, teens and young children) it is well-documented that stress is a major, perhaps the most prominent, cause of disease. It is estimated that over 75% of all diseases are related to prolonged stress.
Another stress management truth: There is a strong emphasis within our culture to convince people that diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, arthritis and cancer are the result of genetic factors. However, although genetic traits are passed down from generation to generation, a genetic predisposition to a disease does not necessarily mean that the disease will manifest. Stress reduction treatment understands that stress-reaction and anxiety-worry play a major role in the disease process. The way you treat your genes throughout your life is more important than genetic inheritance in terms of later health and disease states.
